VGC Guide

130 Sp.Def. 110 Def. 95 HP. Umbreon doesn't lose fast. And Yawn forces opponents to either switch out or fall asleep at the end of their next turn — neither option is good for them.

Umbreon's stat distribution is extreme — all bulk, no offense. The 130 Sp.Def is the highest among all Eeveelutions, and combined with 110 Defense and 95 HP, it is nearly impossible to OHKO in a doubles environment. The trade-off is 65 Attack, 60 Sp.Atk, and 65 Speed: Umbreon has no interest in dealing direct damage.

These stats tell you exactly how to use Umbreon: keep it on the field, drain opponent resources, and control tempo with Yawn and Helping Hand. Leftovers recovery at 1/16 HP per turn extends its staying power even further.

The Yawn Strategy

How Yawn Works

Yawn does not cause sleep immediately. The target falls asleep at the END of the following turn. This means the opponent still gets one action before sleeping.

This creates a forced dilemma:

  • Option A: Switch out. Avoids sleep, but wastes this turn and shifts the field state — the new Pokémon may be a poor matchup against your partner.
  • Option B: Stay in and act. They get one more move, then fall asleep at end of turn, missing their next action entirely.

The standard execution: use Yawn on turn 1, apply pressure with your partner on turn 2 — regardless of whether they switch or sleep, you come out ahead.

Important Rule Notes
Yawn cannot be bounced by Magic Bounce — it sets a sleep counter, not a status condition, so Magic Mirror does not apply.
If the Yawned Pokémon switches out before sleep triggers, the sleep counter does not carry to the replacement.
Misty Terrain prevents sleep on grounded Pokémon while active — watch out for Misty Terrain teams.

Foul Play: Using the Opponent's Attack

Foul Play is Umbreon's primary damage tool, but it operates differently from most moves: the damage calculation uses the target's Attack stat, not Umbreon's own Attack.

This means Foul Play hits hardest against high-Attack physical attackers. Against Koraidon (135 base Attack), for example, Umbreon's Foul Play hits about as hard as if Umbreon itself had 135 Attack — which is excellent for a Pokémon whose actual Attack is 65.

Move stats: Dark-type / 95 Power / 100% Accuracy / Single target. It provides meaningful damage against physical attackers while also covering Ghost types that are immune to Normal and Fighting.

Dark-Type Immunity to Prankster

All Dark-type Pokémon are natively immune to status moves used by Pokémon with the Prankster ability. This is one of Umbreon's most valuable niche roles in competitive VGC.

The following moves simply fail against Umbreon:

Source
Whimsicott (Prankster)
Tailwind
Umbreon is fully immune; partner still benefits
Source
Grimmsnarl (Prankster)
Reflect / Light Screen
Screens fail on Umbreon; it gets no defensive boost
Source
Murkrow (Prankster)
Tailwind / Feather Dance
Priority redirect and Attack drop both fail
Source
Sableye (Prankster)
Taunt / Will-O-Wisp
Cannot block Umbreon's support moves

Counters & Checks

Threat
Fairy ×2
Example
Flutter Mane, Sylveon
Response
Fairy-type moves deal double damage. Pair Umbreon with Steel or Poison-type coverage for these matchups.
Threat
Fighting ×2
Example
Incineroar (ironically), Urshifu
Response
Fighting coverage bypasses Umbreon's bulk — keep a Flying or Psychic partner ready to absorb.
Threat
Bug ×2
Example
Iron Moth, Volcarona
Response
Special Bug attackers exploit Umbreon's low Sp.Atk investment and can target special bulk despite the 130 base stat.
Threat
Misty Terrain
Example
Sylveon, Xerneas teams
Response
Misty Terrain prevents all ground-level sleep, completely shutting down the Yawn strategy while active.

Umbreon vs Other Dark-Type Support

Umbreon is not the only Dark-type support option in VGC. Here is how it stacks up against the two most common alternatives:

Umbreon
  • · Highest Sp.Def (130) of the three
  • · Yawn forces switches or sleep
  • · Dark-type Prankster immunity
  • · Best pure stall and durability
  • · No Fake Out or Intimidate
Incineroar
  • · Fake Out + Intimidate: unmatched opening support
  • · Parting Shot re-triggers Intimidate repeatedly
  • · Weak to Water/Ground/Fighting/Rock ×2
  • · More proactively useful but less durable
  • · Lower special bulk than Umbreon
Hydreigon
  • · Offensive Dark/Dragon typing
  • · More offensive utility (Draco Meteor, etc.)
  • · Dark-type Prankster immunity
  • · Semi-offensive, not pure support
  • · Much lower bulk than Umbreon

FAQ

Is Umbreon good in VGC 2026?
Yes. Umbreon's 130 Sp.Def / 110 Def / 95 HP bulk makes it nearly impossible to OHKO in doubles. Yawn creates constant forced decision-making for opponents, and its Dark-type Prankster immunity gives it a unique niche against support-heavy teams in Regulation I.
How does Yawn work in VGC doubles?
Yawn does not cause immediate sleep. The target falls asleep at the END of the following turn, meaning they still act once before sleeping. This forces a dilemma: switch out (waste tempo) or stay in and sleep at end of next turn. Either way, the Umbreon user benefits. Note: Misty Terrain blocks sleep on grounded Pokémon.
What is Umbreon's best moveset for VGC?
The standard set is Yawn / Helping Hand / Foul Play / Protect with Leftovers, Careful nature, and 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Sp.Def EVs. An Assault Vest variant runs Yawn / Snarl / Foul Play / Protect for maximum disruption without relying on Leftovers recovery.
Why is Umbreon immune to Prankster moves?
Dark-type Pokémon natively resist all status moves used by Pokémon with the Prankster ability. This means Whimsicott's Tailwind, Grimmsnarl's Reflect and Light Screen, Murkrow's Tailwind, and Sableye's priority status moves all fail against Umbreon — making it a hard counter to Prankster-based team archetypes.

Umbreon's 5.8% usage in Regulation I reflects stable demand for durable support — its 130 base Sp.Def is the highest of any non-legendary Dark-type, and Yawn's sleep triggers the following turn regardless of whether the opponent used Protect on the Yawn turn.

Key Damage Calculations

Lv50 · Standard Format
Sp.Def Bulk Check — Calyrex-Shadow Astral Barrage
252+ SpA Calyrex-Shadow Astral Barrage vs 252 HP / 252+ SpD Umbreon: 102-120 (51.2 - 60.3%) -- not a guaranteed 2HKO with Leftovers

Even against one of the strongest special attackers in the format, Umbreon survives two hits with Leftovers recovery — a testament to its exceptional special bulk ceiling.

Foul Play Output — vs High-Attack Koraidon
Umbreon Foul Play vs 252 Atk Koraidon: uses Koraidon's 135 base Attack -- effectively ~95 BP Dark with 135 Atk

Foul Play calculates damage using the target's own Attack stat rather than Umbreon's 65 base Attack. The higher the opponent's Attack, the more threatening Foul Play becomes — giving Umbreon surprising offensive leverage against physical attackers.

Yawn Threat Value — Protect Does Not Avoid Sleep
Yawn T1 → target sleeps end of T2 -- Protect on T1 does not reset the sleep counter

Unlike Spore or Sleep Powder, Yawn sets a sleep counter when it lands. If the opponent Protects on the turn Yawn is used, the counter still activates — they sleep at the end of the next turn. Only switching out avoids the sleep effect, making Yawn a uniquely difficult move to play around.
