VGC Sand Setter / Physical Attacker Guide

Tyranitar
VGC Guide

The original weather setter. Sand Stream combined with massive 134 base Attack makes Tyranitar one of the most imposing non-Restricted threats in VGC. Rock typing receives a 1.5× SpDef boost in sand, and paired with Excadrill it forms one of the most dangerous cores in the format.

Why Tyranitar Dominates VGC

Tyranitar's strength comes from multiple layers of value. Sand Stream automatically activates Sandstorm on entry — no move slot required, weather is set the moment it arrives. This means from turn one it's already applying passive chip damage, freeing its four move slots entirely for offense.

In Sandstorm, Rock-type Pokémon receive a 1.5× Special Defense boost. Tyranitar's 100 base SpDef becomes effectively 150 in sand — making it considerably harder to take down with special moves. Rock, Ground, and Steel teammates immune to sand chip also benefit from extended survivability under the weather.

Finally, 134 base Attack is among the highest of any non-Restricted Pokémon. Rock Slide hits both opponents simultaneously, Crunch is unaffected by Ghost-type immunities, and Ice Punch covers Dragon and Grass — leaving very few safe switch-ins against Tyranitar.

Sand Stream: Mastering Weather Control

Sandstorm Effect Mechanics
🏜️

Chip Damage Every Turn

In Sandstorm, all non-Rock, non-Ground, non-Steel Pokémon lose 1/16 of their max HP per turn. While opponents bleed out, your sand team is typically immune — creating a sustained HP pressure advantage over a long game.

🛡️

Rock-Type SpDef Boost

All Rock-type Pokémon have their Special Defense multiplied by 1.5 in Sandstorm. Tyranitar, Garchomp, and other Rocky teammates gain far more SpDef than their base stat suggests — fully active at Level 50.

Sand Rush Speed Activation

Excadrill's Sand Rush ability doubles its Speed in Sandstorm. Combined with Tyranitar's weather setting, Excadrill reaches roughly 260 Speed at Level 50 — outspeeding virtually every Pokémon on the field and sweeping with priority.

The Sand Ecosystem: Who Benefits?

Sandstorm isn't just a damage weather — it's a complete tactical ecosystem. Tyranitar's Sand Stream brings three layers of value: passive chip to opponents, a SpDef buff to Rock types, and activated abilities on sand-powered teammates.

Excadrill
Sand Rush

Sand Rush doubles Speed in sand — reaches ~260 Spe at Level 50, outspeeding virtually every Pokémon; becomes a hyper-fast sweeper

Tyranitar (itself)
SpDef Boost

Rock-type SpDef ×1.5 in sand makes its 100 base SpDef effectively 150 — far more resilient to special damage than base stats suggest

Garchomp
Sand Immune

Dragon/Ground typing is immune to sand chip damage; pairs as a second physical attacker who can also threaten Ground-type coverage

Great Tusk
Sand Immune

Ground-type, immune to sand chip; provides Rapid Spin utility and a second heavy physical threat to pair alongside Tyranitar

EV Spread Breakdown

Choice Band Standard (Recommended)
Recommended
252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def · Adamant

Maximizes bulk and offensive output simultaneously. 252 HP ensures Tyranitar survives at least one strong hit; 252 Atk pushes Rock Slide and Crunch to maximum damage. Ideal with Choice Band locked-move style.

Assault Vest Bulky
Specially Bulky
252 Atk / 252 HP / 4 SpDef · Adamant

Sand's 1.5× Rock-type SpDef boost + Assault Vest's ×1.5 SpDef multiplier stacks to extraordinary special bulk. Best when your team needs Tyranitar to wall special threats while staying offensive.

Trick Room Variant (Min Speed)
Trick Room
252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def · Brave (0 Speed IVs)

0 Speed IVs + Brave nature drops Tyranitar to ~76 Speed at Level 50, making it an effective Trick Room attacker. Acts near-last in normal play but first under TR — combined with 134 base Atk it deletes targets.

Counters & Weaknesses

⚠ Fighting ×4 Warning

Tyranitar is Rock/Dark — Fighting is ×2 vs Rock and ×2 vs Dark, stacking to ×4 total. A strong Fighting move almost guarantees an OHKO. Counter-play: Incineroar Fake Out protection, Wide Guard for spread Fighting moves.

Threat
Fighting Moves ×4
Example
Conkeldurr Focus Punch, Iron Hands Close Combat
Response
Incineroar Fake Out buys a free turn of safety; Wide Guard blocks spread Fighting moves; avoid leaving Tyranitar exposed to priority Fighting moves
Threat
Water Moves ×2
Example
Kyogre Origin Pulse, Surf
Response
Pivot to Steel or Grass partner vs Water-type weather teams; Tyranitar sand can cancel opponent water weather, but Kyogre will override sand immediately
Threat
Grass Moves ×2
Example
Rillaboom Grassy Glide, Leafstorm
Response
Sand's SpDef boost helps Tyranitar survive some special Grass attacks; watch for Cotton Guard + Grass Knot combos in stall-oriented teams
Threat
Steel Moves ×2
Example
Gholdengo Make It Rain (Steel spread)
Response
Ghost-type teammates are immune to Gholdengo's Make It Rain (Steel doesn't hit Ghost); or use sand's SpDef boost to tank a single hit

Best Teammates

Excadrill
Steel/Ground

Sand Rush doubles Speed in sand — the textbook sand duo. Tyranitar sets sand on entry, Excadrill sweeps at ~260 Spe. One of the most reliable and powerful two-Pokémon cores in all of VGC.

Garchomp
Dragon/Ground

Ground-type immunity to sand chip; pairs as a second high-Attack physical attacker. Dragon Claw spread + Rock Slide creates enormous pressure on nearly any opposing team structure.

Incineroar
Fire/Dark

Intimidate softens opposing physical attackers; Fake Out protects Tyranitar from the devastating ×4 Fighting weakness. Parting Shot cycling paired with Tyranitar's presence locks down opponent rhythm.

Great Tusk
Ground

Ground-type immune to sand chip; provides Rapid Spin utility for hazard removal. A second bulky physical threat alongside Tyranitar that can also set Trick Room to invert Tyranitar's below-average Speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tyranitar good in VGC 2026?

Yes. Tyranitar is one of the most iconic non-Restricted threats in VGC. Sand Stream auto-sets Sandstorm on entry, the Rock-type SpDef boost makes it considerably bulkier in sand, and pairing with Excadrill creates a sand core that applies constant pressure. Its 134 base Attack threatens huge damage on virtually every non-Steel target.

What is the best Tyranitar moveset for VGC?

The standard offensive set is Rock Slide / Crunch / Ice Punch / Protect, holding Choice Band with Adamant nature and 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def EVs. For added special bulk, run Assault Vest with Rock Slide / Crunch / Fire Punch / Low Kick — dropping Protect for broader coverage.

Why does Tyranitar have a ×4 Fighting weakness?

Tyranitar is Rock/Dark type. Fighting is ×2 effective against Rock, and also ×2 effective against Dark — those two multipliers stack to ×4 total damage. This is Tyranitar's most dangerous liability. Counter it with Incineroar's Fake Out to stall a Fighting-type attacker, or use Wide Guard to block spread Fighting moves.

How do I use Tyranitar and Excadrill together in VGC?

Tyranitar auto-sets Sandstorm when it enters the field. Excadrill's Sand Rush doubles its Speed in sand — at Level 50 it reaches roughly 260 Speed, outspeeding virtually every Pokémon. Turn 1: Protect with Tyranitar (to avoid Fake Out) while Excadrill threatens. Once sand is confirmed, swap Tyranitar out and let Excadrill sweep freely. This is one of the most reliable two-Pokémon combos in all of VGC.

Key Damage Calculations

Lv50 · Standard Format
Rock Slide vs Flutter Mane (Super Effective)
252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Rock Slide vs 0 HP / 0 Def Flutter Mane: 132-156 (88.6 - 104.7%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO

Choice Band Rock Slide has a meaningful OHKO chance on Flutter Mane — and even when it fails, one turn of sand chip pushes Flutter Mane into KO range for Tyranitar's partner, making Rock Slide the most threatening spread move in the sand archetype.

Flutter Mane Moonblast vs Tyranitar in Sand (SpDef Boost Value)
252 SpA Flutter Mane Moonblast vs 252 HP / 4 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 102-122 (49.5 - 59.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Sand's 1.5× Rock-type SpDef boost raises Tyranitar's effective SpDef from 85 to 127 — enough to survive Flutter Mane's Moonblast and hit back. Outside of sand, the same Moonblast rolls significantly higher and threatens an earlier KO.

Crunch vs Calyrex-Shadow: STAB Dark Coverage
252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Crunch vs 252 HP / 4 Def Calyrex-Shadow: 186-218 (89.9 - 105.3%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO

Crunch is Tyranitar's primary tool against Ghost and Psychic Restricted legendaries. STAB Dark hits Ghost types for ×2, and Choice Band Crunch gives a meaningful OHKO chance on Calyrex-Shadow — a critical psychological threat that forces opponent respect in the preview.
